A successful portrait painter at an early age, Johann Ender continued to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He won all four of the academy's prizes. After his studies, he visited Italy and Greece and began to create works with biblical and historical themes. He returned to Austria in 1826 and became a respected portrait painter. In 1837, he was appointed Imperial Counselor, and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
