The Fitzwilliam Museum was founded in 1835. It houses a diverse collection of art dating from the 13th century to the present. It includes works by artists from Japan and America, as well as some from Europe and America. There is a wonderful collection of Japanese woodblocks and works by the artist Monet. The Italian Renaissance painting collection contains some superlative Venetian pictures. The collection also includes portraits by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, and Hals, as well as many paintings by Turner.
