Scottish-born American landscape and cattle painter, James McDougal Hart (1831-1917), is widely considered one of the most important and influential artists of the Hudson River School. Although he mainly painted landscapes, he also created many cattle paintings, including herds of cattle. His paintings are among the most popular of the group's works. 

The work of James McDougal Hart is not particularly well-known, but his style is still highly regarded. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and served as vice president from 1895 to 1899. He also exhibited his paintings at the Brooklyn Association of Art and at various major exhibitions around the country. His work is not well-known, but it does have a certain mystical quality.
