Francesco Hayez was born in Murano, Italy, in 1778. He attended nude drawing classes at the Academy of Venice in 1804. He then won a boarding school competition. He studied with Canova and Pietro Benvenuti in Florence, where he was a student. Both painters were important influences on Hayez. His paintings are highly collectible and represent an enduring part of Italian art history.
