Hayman's early work is influenced by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. He was commissioned by Sir Thomas Hanmer to produce a series of large-scale history paintings. His student list includes the actors David Garrick and Mason Chamberlin, who later went on to become prominent actors. In addition, Hayman illustrated Samuel Richardson's Pamela novel and Milton's Paradise Lost. He also worked on Tobias Smollett's translation of Don Quixote, which was published in 1772.
