Benjamin Williams Leader RA was an English artist who specialized in landscapes. His landscapes were a mix of light and shadow, often with a combination of both. While his paintings were quite colorful and evocative of the English countryside, they were also realistic enough to capture the feelings of viewers. He began painting in his hometown of Worcester, but soon traveled to Scotland, Wales, and the rest of the British Isles. Although he did not complete his R. A. course, Leader's paintings soon caught the eye of wealthy buyers and he became a successful commercial artist within a few years of his first sale.

Despite the early success of his art, Benjamin Williams Leader was never satisfied with his style. He experimented with subject matter and methods until he reached his desired level of mastery. In order to capture the natural light and shade effects, he made frequent trips to the countryside. He sketched scenes in the West Midlands, Worcester, and Bettws-y-Coed, where he lived.
