Our Village 1902 by John Ottis Adams is a popular painting by American impressionist John Ottis. Adams was a young artist who grew up in central Indiana. He attended school in Shelbyville and then graduated from Martinsville High School. His teachers encouraged him to pursue art. When he was 18, Adams visited the Indiana State Fair and was inspired by William Merritt Chase's Still Life with Watermelon. In 1896, he joined the Society of Western Artists. He served as its president in 1908 and 1909.

In 1896, John Ottis Adams founded the Society of Western Artists, which continued to function until 1914. In 1898, he married Winfred Brady, who had trained at the art student league and Drexel Institute. The couple moved to Brookville, Indiana, in 1899. The painting was commissioned by a wealthy businessman. The Cooper family continued to live in Brookville, where Adams had a studio.

Adams's work received international recognition for its representation of rural America. His painting Iridescence of a Shallow Stream won a bronze medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. His painting A Winter Morning won the $500 Fine Arts Building Prize at the Society of Western Artists exhibition in Chicago in 1907. Adams's work is now found in numerous Indiana cultural institutions. The Hermitage is one of the best examples of his work.
