The Netherlands' national museum is devoted to art and history from the country's history. The Rijksmuseum is situated at the Museum Square in Amsterdam South. Other nearby museums include the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk, and Concertgebouw. 

You can explore the masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum. The collection at the museum is huge, spanning several centuries and a variety of art forms. The building itself is a blend of Dutch Renaissance and neo-Gothic styles. The museum opened to the public in 1885. In 2003, the Rijksmuseum underwent a EUR375 million ($443 million) renovation. 

While the museum's main collections focus on 17th-century Dutch art, it also houses a broad range of works from other western European schools and other cultures. You'll also find works by Japanese artists and other styles of decorative arts. The Rijksprentenkabinet, associated with the museum, houses one of Europe's best collections of drawings, prints, and illuminated manuscripts.
