The Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggior is one of Caravaggio's earliest paintings. It depicts the last supper of Jesus before his crucifixion. In both paintings, Christ reveals himself to the disciples. The apostles are Cleopas and Luke, with Cleopas' arms raised in amazement. In the second painting, however, the apostles appear subdued.

The painting was completed in 1601. The commission for this work was made by Italian nobleman Ciriaco Mattei, a patron of the arts and a member of the ruling House of Mattei, which was one of the most powerful families in Rome during the time. The work shows the disciples eating a meal with a group of disciples. The disciples are astonished when they find Jesus at the table, as he had not yet appeared to them. The apostles are dressed in rag-and-bone clothing, highlighting their untidy looks. Meanwhile, Jesus has a beard-free head and flowing locks that are a sign of his divinity.

The Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggia is a great example of how Caravaggio shaped the art world. The painting is a representation of the final supper between Jesus and the disciples in the Gospel of Luke. Its composition is based on the life-like qualities of the people in the scene. He brought the biblical figures up to life and made them human. Its dark and strong light make it very difficult to distinguish the dead man from the sitters.
