The Van Gogh Museum is the largest museum in the Netherlands, and is home to the world's largest collection of paintings by the Dutch artist. The paintings on display range from peasant portraits of the early 1700s to later works from sunny France. The paintings are on display in four floors, allowing visitors to experience Van Gogh's life through the paintings. Each exhibit is chronologically organized. From the ground floor, visitors learn about VanGogh's life and career in paintings.
The architecture of the museum is striking, with its imposing modernist architecture. The original building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a prominent Dutch architect who was a member of De Stijl, a group of progressive artists in the 1920s. In 1999, Kisho Kurokawa added a separate wing, featuring a transparent glass structure. The building houses temporary exhibitions from well-known artists. In 2015, the museum added a new wing to accommodate even more visitors.
