Émile Jean-Horace Vernet was a French painter who painted portraits, battles, and Orientalist subjects. His work has been exhibited in museums and private collections around the world.

In 1833, Vernet made his first trip to Algeria, where he visited the nomads of Ben Koula. He believed that Africa was the land of the future, and that it held a vast gold mine for France. He bought substantial property in the region and began painting. The paintings depict the gestures and attitudes of the nomads. Some are difficult to read, but many people find them interesting and a tribute to the great painter.
